What Patients Can Expect During A Pulmonary Function Test
A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is used to analyze multiple conditions, such as COPD, asthma or other respiratory diseases. A PFT test is administered in four parts and takes place during the same visit. We encourage you to watch the video and review the four parts below, prior to your test. The technician will forward your test results to your provider, who will receive the data and follow up with you. The test takes 20 to 30 minutes and is appropriate for all ages, 5 to 95.
Pulmonary Function Testing:
- Pre-Flow Volume Loop Test: This tests for lung obstructions and breathing abnormalities. You’ll do this test at least three times.
- Lung Volume Test: This measures different volumes, flows and pressures inside the lungs. You’ll take this a minimum of three times.
- Diffusion Lung Capacity Test: This measures oxygen’s capability to go from your lungs to your bloodstream. You’ll do this at least twice.
- Post-Flow Volume Loop Test: With the help of a bronchodilator, you’ll do the same test you did at the beginning to compare the functioning of your lungs.
